I have never seen such a well put description of one of the Wal-Mart phenomenon: "What Wal-Mart does is represent their millions of customers very, very well." Spot on. When you think of it like that, where can you find fault with Wal-Mart's relentless pursuit of great value?

Another gem in this posting is the phrase "Chinese value at American prices". Such a simple, straightforward explanation of what some consumers instinctively know when they are making their purchase decisions.

I really appreciate your ability to present great complex concepts, be they value or lean or marketing, and make it a great morning read.

Thanks again!

I really like your description Wal-Mart. Exactly what its founder wrote in his autobiography, and I think that's how they still operate. They just try to be "the best agent for their customers".
By the way, Kitchen Aid is sourcing some of its products in China, sorry for disappointing you...

Yup, when I pay a premium price, I want a premium product -- a "Made in China" product from the same factory everyone else sources from with a fancy label doesn't cut it.

My philosophy is to go cheap for the stuff I only use occasionally, and pay for quality (but not "the best") for stuff I use all the time (e.g. Wiha screwdrivers, Bondhus wrenches).

Two good sources for cheap stuff are Harbour Freight and Daiso Japan, where you pay Chinese prices for Chinese stuff (although both do have some good non-Chinese stuff, e.g. I've bought some sweet Made in Japan bowls at Daiso)

Sorry to hear about KitchenAid and China - but not surprised. Given that they are now owned by Whirlpool, I suppose China sourcing was inevitable.
