"A chief is a man who takes responsibility. He does not say 'my men were defeated'; he says 'I was defeated.'"

--Antoine de St-Exupery

"Mr. Rubin said his pay was justified and that there were higher-paying opportunities available to him"

But he didn't want to move to Columbia.

Great points in this post.

As a long-time "Japan veteran" and cross-cultural management consultant working in the manufacturing industry for over 20 years, the unwillingness of so many business leaders in America to accept responsibility when things go wrong is a major pet peeve of mine. This behavior trickles down to lower levels of the organization, and breeds finger-pointing behavior among the rank and file. True lean management is impossible under these conditions.

Confucian values dictate that the higher up one is in the hierarchy, the heavier the burden of responsibility. This is something I deeply respect about Japanese culture. It's all about honor and integrity, something too many of America's business leaders seem to lack.

As I see it, having leaders with integrity and honor is more critical in developing a lean culture than all the lean tools combined. So glad you're focusing on the cultural dimension of lean.
