Excellent Article.
Another name to add to the list is John Boyd.
"Mind of War" by Grant Hammond tells the story of Air Force Colonel John Boyd, who discovered that successful pilots win against their opponents by thinking faster than them. He invented the O-O-D-A loop, observe-orient-decide-act, and argued that the faster an individual or team could execute these loops, the more options you would have and the less options the adversary would have. (Bobby Knight takes away his opponent's options by not giving them a timeout to plan against him. Ohno and Shingo take away the opponents options by not shutting down their factories).
Boyd took this idea further and influenced US Marine doctrine with the idea, among others, of "Commander's Intent." The idea that the boss communicates a clear vision and understanding of the situation to his subordinates but allows them to work out the details using their experience and superior detailed knowledge. Definitely a page from the Ohno playbook.
